Do you have a favorite pair of jeans with a hole in the knee, or a cozy knit sweater with a loose thread sitting forgotten in the back of your closet?

While the traditional rule of mending was once to hide any damage as seamlessly as possible, a beautiful alternative has taken the crafting world by storm: Visible Mending.

Today, I’m going to introduce the charm of visible mending—a creative practice that breathes new life into worn-out garments and turns imperfections into your own unique fashion statement.

What is Visible Mending?

"Don't hide the scars—transform them into a beautiful, personalized work of art."

Visible mending is exactly what it sounds like: repairing clothes in a way that highlights the repair rather than hiding it. Instead of concealing wear and tear, we use vibrant embroidery floss, contrasting fabric patches, and beautiful stitching patterns (such as Japanese Sashiko) to celebrate the life of the garment.

It’s a key part of the sustainable, eco-friendly slow fashion movement, making your wardrobe genuinely one-of-a-kind.

Essential Tools to Get Started

Before diving in, here are the simple tools you will need:

  • Garment to Mend: Denim jeans, cotton shirts, or worn-out knitwear.

  • Patch Fabric: A sturdy scrap fabric (denim, patterned cotton, or linen) cut slightly larger than the hole.

  • Mending Thread: Bold, colorful embroidery floss (such as 25-gauge stranded cotton) or strong Sashiko thread.

  • Basic Supplies: Hand-sewing needles, pins, scissors, and a water-soluble fabric marker.

Step-by-Step Guide: Mending a Denim Knee

Let's walk through the most popular project: repairing a hole in a pair of blue jeans using a basic running stitch (Sashiko-style) patch.

STEP 1: Prep the Area & Choose Your Patch

Trim away any excessively frayed, messy threads around the edges of the hole. Cut your patch fabric so it is about 1.5 to 2 cm larger than the hole on all sides.

STEP 2: Position and Pin the Patch

Turn your jeans inside out and place the patch fabric directly over the hole. Secure it firmly with sewing pins so it doesn’t shift. Flip the garment right-side out to make sure the patch completely covers the opening from the front.

STEP 3: Sketch Your Pattern (Optional)

If you want clean, even stitches, use a water-soluble fabric pen and a ruler to lightly draw a grid or parallel guide lines spaced about 0.5 cm apart on the front of the fabric.

STEP 4: Sew with a Running Stitch

Thread your needle with your favorite bright, contrasting color. Begin hand-sewing a simple running stitch, working back and forth across the patch. Keep your stitches and spacing as uniform as possible, making sure to securely anchor the areas where the patch meets the original fabric.

STEP 5: Finish and Press

Once you’re finished, knot your thread securely on the inside of the garment. Lightly spray the area with water to dissolve the pen marks, and press the mended area with an iron to set the stitches smoothly.
